At some point or another, I bet you’ve come across bohemian design; it can be bright or earthy, patterned, multi-cultural melange of memorable layers and elements you simply can’t miss or forget for its uniqueness. Bohemian style home decor has such a cool laid back vibe. At first glance the look seems to have an anything goes kinda feel.  Bohemian or Boho decorating is for those who want their homes full of life, culture, and interesting items for all the world to see.  The word ‘bohemian’ refers to someone who is socially unconventional and often involved in the arts, making it a great interior design option for a rich and heady space full of visual interest and a relaxed spirit.

During the 60s and 70s, Bohemian style enjoyed a renewed popularity, and many of the key features of that era are consistent with today's Boho-chic style.
The design rules of Boho are that there are no rules.

If you are looking for a style that you can truly make your own, Boho might be for you.

Bohemian Colours

While there are no rules when it comes to Bohemian decorating, you would have probably noticed that warm earthy colours are very common, as are metallics and jewel tones. You will want to think deep browns, greens, and grays for base colours, and then accessorize with saturated purple, fiery orange, and electric blue. Combining and layering colours is what makes this style unique.

Saturate neutral tones with colour by keeping the base tone muted to create a harmonious, soothing oasis boasting modern bohemian décor. When it comes to longevity, a neutral colour palette is always wise. Even white on white is fantastic for a Boho interior.

Botanicals

Also on trend at the moment which fits in with the Boho style are Botanicals. They  are an affordable and easy to source method in creating a relaxed vibe while adding dimension to a room. And let us not forget that plants also do double duty of purifying air while adding a pop of colour, without interfering too much with the rest of your design and confusing the eye 😉

It may remind you of Nana, but hanging plants are also an excellent bohemian addition in any bohemian space, and are a beautiful and fun way to add interest and depth. Get creative with planters and keep those featuring personality and great design in mind.

Bohemian Furniture

Materials and furniture should look as if they’ve lived a life before coming into your home for added charm as bohemian style is all about well-loved pieces that look as if they were sourced from a far-flung market in an exotic locale. So second-hand and vintage items are right at home here.

Vintage leathers, tassels and butterfly chairs - high canopies and low floor-beds all relaxed pieces that will invite your guests to stay awhile!  Think rustic timbers, and woody furniture offset by sturdy materials made up of tie dye blankets and hemp pillows that will transform your space into a 60s haven.

This might sound strange, but the closer to the floor you are, the closer you are to creating an authentic bohemian style house.

Accessorise Boho

Choose a statement piece such as a hanging light or hanging chair. A crocheted or beaded curtain will add a chic twist onto the entryway of an understated room. Today’s global design markets make it easy to find a variety of shapes and styles—perfect for the mix-and-match look.

Again, accessories should give the impression that you are well-travelled (even if you’re not). Artistic accessories will add further interest to your cozy spaces and make for cultured talking points. Go bold with artistic pieces which stand out and are less than ordinary.
