It was a stunning winter's day in Canterbury so we decided to make the most of it and head out for a Sunday's drive.
It wasn't my intention to write a blog about our drive, however I wanted to share some of the images I had taken. My only regret now is I wish I took more.
The Ashburton Lakes is somewhere I haven't been to in about 10 years! And I had forgotten how close it was to our place, about an hour by car, so it made for a perfect Sunday's drive.
People often drive out here to visit Mt Sunday, however as our trip was spontaneous, we were not too sure if we would have had enough fuel to continue any further and didn't want to get stuck out there! Mt Sunday is a well-known filming location for the Lord Of The Rings. This will be a trip for another time.
As you head out through the back of Mount Somers onto the well-formed gravel road, you start to get a glimpse of the magical mountain scenery and it becomes clear as to why they would film out here. It is amazing.
Lake Clearwater and Lake Camp are located along Hakatere-Potts Road. Once we arrived we parked our car at Lake Camp, this is situated right next to lake Clearwater so we were able to pop over to both lakes by foot. We hadn't really planned on doing any activities as such here however there are some great walks you can do (a note for next time) and we saw plenty of people biking.
Image: Lake Camp. In the summer it would be great to bring some kayaks down for the children to paddle in the Lakes.
The lakes are surrounded my rugged snowy mountains in the Winter. Unfortunately, there was a tiny bit of wind so I didn’t get the perfect reflections in the water. But to be honest I actually prefer this. I love the contrasting colours and didn't want it to look like a stock photo.
There is also a little village at Lake Clearwater with some small holiday homes which you may be able to rent. It’s pretty off the beaten path though and I am not sure if they have power there.
I have decided to add this image of Lake Clearwater to the website as I love the colours and scenery so much. What a magical place to visit. We will certainly be back again for part two!
